Drumsticks in mustard seeds gravy

Drumsticks are highly nutritious and have multiple health benefits. It is high in calcium, an potent anti-bacterial agent and detoxifier i.e., purifies blood. Drumstick lowers lowers blood sugar levels, eases respiratory problems and is good for pregnant women too. It helps in digestion and protects against infection. I can go on and on with its health benefits.  My husband used to avoid this when I cooked in sambhar but after taking this recipe he himself gets this vegetable from market. No more wait now. Here is the recipe which will make the drumsticks finger licking delicious.



Ingredients - Serving 4 Persons


  1. Drumsticks - 4 
  2. Musterd Seeds - 1/2 bowl
  3. Kasurii Metthi - 1/2 bowl
  4. Coriander powder - 2 tsp
  5. Red Chilli powder - As per taste
  6. Garlic - 6 pods
  7. Tomato - 1 big Size
  8. Lemon juice - 1tsp
  9. Termeric powder - 1 tsp
  10. Salt - As per taste
  11. Oil - 3 - 4 tsp
  12. Water - 1/2 litres
Method of Preparation

  1. Take drumsticks and cut into approximately 2 inches pieces
  2. Take mixer grinder jar and put mustard seeds, red chilli powder, garlic pods  and coriander powder in it and grind it with the help of little water. Make a fine paste if it.
  3. Cut tomato into pieces and grind it in paste form. You can use the same jar without completely cleaning the paste made in the above step 2.
  4. Add some oil in a pan and heat it.
  5. Add 10 - 12 mustard seeds into the heated oil and let it be cracked
  6. Add mustard seeds, coriander powder, above made red chilli powder paste and tomato paste in heated oil in pan.
  7. Add turmeric powder and salt in the above.
  8. Roast it until it turns brown.It take 10 to 12 minutes for turning into brown.
  9. Now take another pan, put one tsp oil in it
  10. Heat oil and add kasuri methi and roast it for 1 minute.
  11. Add this roasted kasuri methi into the roasted mustard paste. You can keep stirring it continuously so that the gravy is not burnt in the bottom.
  12. Now add drumsticks pieces into the mixture and fry it for 5 minutes so that drumsticks are coated well with mustard paste. Do it on low or medium flame.
  13. Add water to it and cover it with lid to cook the drumsticks. It will take 10 -12 minutes to cook in medium flame. Drumsticks take bit longer to cook.
  14. When drumsticks are cooked and gravy becomes little thick then add lemon juice to it.
  15. Continue cooking for other 5 minutes.
  16. Take it out in a serving bowl and serve it with hot chapati.

Tips-

  1. You can use dry mango powder in place of lemon juice.
  2. Drumsticks take little longer to cook and should be cooked on low or medium flame.
  3. You can also flowing consistency gravy if you want.
  4. If you have fresh fenugreek (Methi) leaves available (generally available in winters) then you can use the same in place of Kasuri Methi (in the off season generally summers you can use Kasuri Methi)
  5. Mustard seeds flavour and fenugreek (Methi) leaves when combined is a deadly combination.
